Reasons I am Glad I Homeschool: Trigonometry

Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) recently reported an incident where a homeschooling family was threatened and intimidated by a juvenile worker and social worker. One of the questions they asked, while threatening to remove the children from the home was “Are you capable of teaching your kids trigonometry.” While they were wrong to ask that question, and the harassment was quickly ended, I had to ask myself the same thing. Can I teach my child trigonometry? No, I cannot. On the other hand, I can make sure she gets a good and proper teacher. My personal experience with Trigonometry … Continue reading

In a word, studies have shown that the answer is yes. Look at the Chance of Success Study recently completed and every other educational study ever released. They all say that richer, smarter parents have richer smarter kids. But where do you … Continue reading

Thoughts on Home schooling a Gifted Child

I consider myself fairly intelligent and well educated. When people ask what we’ll do for higher mathematics–I’ve always said that I would teach them–I can do that. When people ask what we’ll do for foreign languages–well, I can teach that too–I am tri-lingual. I am well read, well versed in history and science, and I can even teach beginning music theory on several different instruments. (I am not telling you this so you can be wowed by my intelligence. . .just wait!) I’ve also said that you don’t need all that to homeschool because you can surely read anything you’re … Continue reading

Reasons I am Glad we Homeschool: Chance of Success Study

Children in Georgia are not likely to be successful in school and in life, according to a new study. Joy! I thought, does this mean it is time to get out of Dodge? Apparently, kids living in my fair state do not have a chance in (h-e-double hockey sticks) of having a successful life. Moving over the state line will not help either; most of the South is at the bottom of this barrel. Ranking number 38 out of 50 states, the study shows that because of thirteen social, economic and educational measures, Georgian children are doomed to mediocre lives … Continue reading
